Spring Planting
|
|
Spring is like the return of an old friend. As we emerge from
a season of great change we will start to see the trees blooming, see the bulbs
sprouting and hear the birds singing. Spring is one of the most optimal seasons
for planting. It is safe to begin planting shrubs, trees, and evergreens in our
area as soon as the frost is out of the ground. A good rule of thumb is April 1st.
The vibrant colors and beauty of annual flowers should be planted after May 15th
to protect from a late spring frost. Perhaps if you are unsure, then call one of
our landscape designers for help in creating your outdoor paradise.

Weed Prevention, Mulching & Edging
|
|
Spring is finally here and there is much to get done after the winter
snow has melted. We suggest putting down a weed preventative, such as Preen, as
early as possible so you can eliminate the need for hand-weeding. Preen is a preventative
so it will not kill your existing weeds; it only stops the new weed seeds from germinating.
Preen helps to do the work for you so you spend less time in the landscape doing
difficult hand-weeding. Without weeds in the landscape beds your plants will grow
larger and stronger. Continue putting Preen in your landscape beds approximately
every 9-12 weeks. Preen can be used any time during the growing season.
Spring is a great time of the year to mulch your plants. Mulch helps
to prevent weeds, hold moisture in the ground, protect the plants roots from the
changing climate, and also makes your landscaping look even more beautiful. While
touching up your mulch check out your edging. Is the lawn starting to grow into
your beds? Keeping the edging neat and clean will be the final touch to your landscaping.
Whether you have plastic, brick, or natural edging sometimes you will need to repair
or touch up the border. If you need help in the yard give us a call and we can remulch
and fix your edging along with pulling weeds and adding Preen. Give us a call today
at 708/349-6989 or email us at landscape@jimmelka.com

Pruning, Trimming & Fertilization
|
|
Customers often have questions on pruning and trimming of shrubs
and trees. Spring is a great time to remove dead and damaged branches from
the winter months. Keep in mind not to do any heavy trimming to your spring
blooming plants because you may trim their blooms off. The best time for trimming
spring bloomers will be immediately after they are done flowering. Also watch
your flowering bulbs, when they are done blooming give them some time to produce
food for the next year. Do not cut the foliage from the bulbs until the foliage
has yellowed.
Spring is the best time to apply fertilizer to your lawn, trees,
and shrubs in the landscape. When applying fertilizer to the lawn make sure the
first application contains a pre-emergent for crabgrass prevention.
As the air temperature rises in the spring so do soil temperatures. Consequently,
tree and shrubs break dormancy and their roots begin to grow. Apply a balanced granular
fertilizer like Olsen's 14-14-10 to help promote healthy leaves for the growing
season. Stop by Jim Melka Garden Center and let our staff explain the benefits our
products offer.

Sage, Orange, & Clove Rotisserie Turkey
|
|
Recipe from Weber's Big Book of Grilling
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Grilling Time: 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 hours
Rub
2 tablespoons dried granulated orange peel
1 tablespoon dried sage
1 tablespoon kosher salt
1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
1 turkey, 12 to 14 pounds
2 small oranges, washed and dried
12 whole cloves
6 medium garlic cloves, crushed
1 bunch fresh sage, tied with cotton string
1. In small bowl thoroughly mix the rub ingredients.
2. Remove and discard the neck, giblets, pop-up timer, and any excess fat from the
turkey. Rinse the turkey, inside and out, under cold water and pat dry with paper
towels.
3. Pierce each orange several times with a knife. Insert 6 whole cloves into each
orange. Put the clove-studded oranges, garlic, and sage into the turkey cavity.
Truss the turkey with cotton string, tying the wings close to the body and securing
the legs. Pin the skin flap to the body with 2 or 3 small trussing needles. Skewer
the turkey lengthwise through the oranges and center on the spit. Rub the entire
exterior of the turkey with the rub mixture, pressing it into the skin.
4. Set the spit on the rotisserie and let the turkey rotate over indirect medium
heat (350 degrees F to 450 degrees F) until the internal temperature reaches
170 degrees F in the breast and 180 degrees F in the thickest part of the thigh,
2-1/4 to 2-1/2 hours. Keep the lid closed as often as possible during grilling.
Note: If you do not have a rotisserie, grill the turkey over indirect medium heat
for 2-1/4 to 2-1/2 hours.
5. When the turkey is fully cooked, turn off the rotisserie and carefully remove
the spit from the rotisserie and place it on a cutting board. Loosely cover the
turkey with aluminum foil and allow to rest for at least 20 minutes. Remove the
spit and discard the oranges, garlic, and sage. Carve the turkey into serving pieces.
Serve warm.
Makes 12 to 14 servings

March & April Weather Thoughts...
|
|
According to the Farmer's Almanac March will open up colder and
snowier than normal. In the middle of the month we might experience our last measurable
snow of the season, but by month end we will turn warm.
April should start out warm and sunny with rain and cool temperatures by the middle
of the month. By the final two weeks of the month we should experience sunny, warm
days with a few spring thunder storms mixed in.
